BRIDAL HAIR & MAKEUP TRIALS: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

The second biggest question after, "will you marry me?" is , "do I need a hair and makeup trial?". Or maybe, you already know you need a trial and your biggest question is "why, do I need a hair and makeup trial?". Well the answer is an easy 9000 word essay, but I'm here to give it to you in bullet point form so you can save your precious wedding planning time. With over 15 years of doing hair and makeup for weddings under my belt, I can confirm that trials are an imperative part of your wedding plan. I have done weddings with and without, and after countless brides, I can confirm that there has been not a single wedding that has not been somewhat effected by not having a trial. Now, does this mean your wedding is going to completely fall apart because you didn't have a trial? No. But it will increase the stress levels for not only you, but your artists as well. Here are the most important notes I can deliver on everything you need to know about the trial and why it is so important.

1. Timing

Every minute is accounted for on your big day. So every minute wasted making alterations is going to cut into your schedule. At your trial, you can be as picky as you want. Try this, change that, do whatever, you have nowhere to be. Also important to note that it is not always as easy as "just take that part off". Makeup is often applied in many many layers giving you one flawless and uniform look. If you start to remove things and then add more back on top, it can make your skin angry and cause the makeup to look blotchy. For your hair, constant heat styling can cause your hair to actually fall flat, so going in with a plan is going to give you the best style. During the trial, your artist will make notes so when it comes to the day, all you have to do is sit in the magic chair and be on your way. I have taken over two hours just for a hair trial that will take me 45 minutes on the day, so if you want everything to run as smoothly as possible, this is how.

2. Style

Much like your wedding dress, you will probably have a vision of what you are looking for, and also like your wedding dress, what you thought would look good on you, may not. What a crisis it would be if you asked for something on your wedding day just to realize that it is not the vibe and you need to start over.

3. Longevity

I think it goes without saying that every bride wants their glam to last as long as possible. It is important to note that hair is hair, and skin is skin. It moves, there's texture, there's moisture (tears), you're going to be manhandled for a lot of the day, your hair and makeup are not going to look like they were just done throughout the whole day. There are, however, certain products that can help and will work for some, but not for others. Maybe you need an extra bobbi-pin here or there, maybe your curls fell and you need to go with a tighter curl. There are many ways a hair stylist or makeup artist can produce the longest wearing look, but everyone is different, so you won't know what works for you until you've tried- which is really the theme of this whole post.

Some tips that will help you get the most out of your trial:

  • Wear white, or something close to what you will be wearing on the day. Color does play a lot into the whole look, if you wear something black it's going to look different than if you were to wear white.

  • Come with a clean face and freshly washed hair- do not show up with your hair tied into a messy bun.

  • Gather lots of inspo pics, note what you like and dislike about all of them, make sure they are not heavily filtered, and that the model has similar coloring to your own!

  • If you are planning on getting a spray tan, you might want to have one for the trial if you anticipate an intense difference of shades.

  • Book earlier in the day so you can wear and see how it lasts.

  • Do not be afraid to communicate! You are hiring a vendor to do a job. Be as picky as you want, I promise you we will not get offended. If they do, maybe they are not the artist for you.

To sum up, there is basically no vendor that you would let wing it for your wedding day. You get a run-through of basically every detail, so why would the main event- YOU- be any different? I hope this guide was helpful and if you have anymore burning questions or are ready to book your trial, contact NuovoBeauty today for $50 off of your hair & makeup combo trial!
