If you're feeling like your hair is limp and lifeless but you want to avoid anything damaging- like teasing- this is the guide for you. Hair health is having a moment, that will hopefully never end, and while becoming more aware of what is good and bad for your locks, comes at a price of what provides results. Dry shampoos and texturizers cause buildup, aerosols are harmful just to breathe, and teasing can physically damage your hair. So what's left? Luckily, as the years have progressed, so has research and development. There are so many new ways to achieve the look you want, while keeping your respiratory tract, your scalp, and your hair in good shape. As someone with thin and fine hair, I have tested countless products so that I could bring you this comprehensive list of result driven recommendations for big beautiful hair.

Color Wow Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer

If you have not heard of Chris Appleton, where have you been. It is no surprise that this celebrity hairstylist behind all of the most glamorous looks has developed a line of products to give you just that. This mousse plumps and lifts your hair and will not be taken down by something as small as sleeping on it. I'm not lying when I say I used this, lived a whole day outside at a BBQ and then woke up the next day still looking fresh. The nice thing is that it can be used on wet or dry hair. So, even if you're not quite at your hair wash day, but you need a little lift, just apply to dry hair and give it a blow.

IGK Body Language Rice Water Plumping and Thickening Mist

This product won't give you the same extreme volume as the Color Wow, but it is a completely acceptable fullness that you might be looking for day-to-day. Only to be used on wet hair, this mist will not only plump up your strands, but works as a de-tangler and has the added benefit of heat protection. If you are hoping for a multi-performance product, this one is for you! NOTE: It does have a light fresh scent-which I love- but if you do not like scents, it might not be for you.

R+Co Skyline Dry Shampoo Powder

We all know the struggle with the between-shampoo-day-hair, and the heartbreak that comes when you try a dry shampoo that promises you the world and then leaves you on read. This one is not that guy. My struggle with dry shampoo has been trying to stay away from the aerosols that I can feel irritating my scalp in real-time, but also finding a powder that doesn't leave a buildup that ends up under my nails when I scratch my head, all while actually mitigating the oil at my roots. Well I think I've found it. This dry shampoo has answered all of my prayers. With scalp loving ingredients, I never feel like I have residue or any itchiness/irritation, and it provides a gentle lift and very light texture while absorbing any oil. I love how it preforms when I apply it before I go to the gym, no trace of post-exercise hair when I return home! The pump is also great compared to other powders. PRO TIP: Dry shampoo will work best when you apply before you actually need it, so that it will be in your hair working to absorb the oil as it comes. Alternatively, if you're in need of some extra TLC, apply your dry shampoo, then flip your hair and hit it with the blow dryer. Flip back and you will have given yourself a healthy lift.

Don't Overload Your Hair With Products

This might seem counter productive to you, but really, less is more. Make sure you are using the right products, and make sure you are not using too many. Starting from your shampoo and conditioner, the wrong products can be too Heavy for your hair and weigh it down, while also making it seem greasy almost immediately after a wash. If your hair tends to get oily quick, try using products that are light but still hydrating- drying out your hair will not yield better results, just create different problems. Sometimes, much like your face, your scalp may present oily, but is actually dry, so having a professional analysis of your scalp will help you to decipher what exactly is going on and what you will need to look for in your products. PRO TIP: Adding a clarifying shampoo once a week will help to get rid of all the buildup that could be accumulating at your follicle AND Shampoo is for roots, conditioner is for ends, I've found I always get a poor result when I apply the conditioner right to my root.

Wash Your Hair Properly

Most people, when washing their hair, will look for a super foamy shampoo and will not be satisfied unless it does so. If you have tried shampooing and have not gotten the sudsy result you are looking for, it could be because your hair is still dirty. As I previously stated, Shampoo is for your scalp. You should only be using about a dime size amount of product and massaging it into your roots. If you find that, that is not doing anything for you, then you know the drill- lather, rinse, repeat. and repeat. Watch as the bubbles build up every time you wash it. This will be a clear indicator that you are removing all of the unwanted dirt and oil. It is also important to note that the "suds" you so desperately long for come from ingredients called surfactants. Surfactants are there to help the soap mix with water and allow for easier spreading of the product through your hair and have no effect on how effectively you've cleaned or not. The amount of suds you get from a shampoo is personal preference, but most popular products do have them. So, if you are still not getting the bubbles, your shampoo may not preform that way, OR if you find yourself using more shampoo from the outset just to get the bubbles, it may be tricking you into thinking you've properly cleaned your scalp.

It can be frustrating dealing with your hair and finding the right products in a never ending sea of supply, but I hope to have steered you onto a path that is not so daunting and treacherous. If you have any questions you can head to my contact page and fill out the form and I will help you as best I can! My only hope is to make this big scary world of beauty a little less intimidating and a little more approachable. Happy hair-styling!
