WILL LASH EXTENSIONS DAMAGE MY LASHES?

The quick answer, is both yes and no. Lash extensions, like anything can be good and bad, but it comes down to a few variables. If you've been lusting after the incredibly low maintenance life of having lashes but are worried that they are going to damage your natural ones, then you should be asking yourself two questions to see if you would be a good candidate.

  1. Can I be gentle with my lashes?

Lash health and longevity relies only so much on your technician and application. They can do the best application possible but if you are not taking care of them from the second you leave your appointment, then they will not last and yes, your natural lashes may sustain some damage. If you rub your eyes, you may cause some shedding of the extensions/natural lashes. If you sleep with your face in the pillow, you may cause some shedding of the extensions/natural lashes. If you put on strip lashes, you guessed it- shedding of extensions/natural lashes. Don't let these things deter you from getting extensions completely, sometimes there is an adjustment period, and before you know it, you will be wearing goggles 24/7 to protect them and all will be good!

2. Do I trust the person applying them?

This one is important. It is incredibly disheartening to go to a lash technician that has been recommended to you and have them be the one to damage your lashes. I have been doing extensions since 2011 and have witnessed absolute horrors, and the sad part is, just because someone posts a nice photo or has more followers or has their name on a business, does not mean that they are doing a good job. If you are busy and you are contemplating booking with someone because it says their time for a full set is only an hour, this is a red flag. Extensions are applied to one natural lash at a time. If you want them applied properly, it's going to take time. If someone can get them done faster, then they are not taking that time to make sure that every extension is secured properly and not stuck to anything else. If you have gotten your lashes done before and experienced some damage, a red flag would have been if you could feel that you had something on your eyes. Extensions should feel like nothing! If you feel a pinching or poking sensation, then that means that there may be some extensions stuck together, and if that's the case, that's where your damage will occur. Lashes are all growing at different stages, If one lash is stuck to another one and that one is growing faster, then it can pull out the little guy that it's attached to. So imagine the anarchy if you have a bunch of lashes stuck together - which I have seen. It's not pretty.

As a lash-tech, I am very rigid when it comes to the sizes I apply to someones natural lash. I will not be putting something that I feel is too heavy for your natural lash, and I will even leave a natural lash if it is too small to take the weight of an extension. Luckily, with the wide variety if thicknesses and lengths, there is always a way to adjust to get the look that you want without compromising the health of your lashes.

The union of a good lash-tech and your gentle home care will result in natural lashes that can withstand carrying the extensions for years to come. I have been seeing clients regularly for upwards of 6 years who- aside from the forced closing of businesses in 2020- have never taken a break, and their natural lashes look amazing! Keep your lashes clean, be gentle, and visit Nuovo Beauty so you do not need to stress about at least one thing in your life.
