It is not uncommon to be completely overwhelmed by this topic. Whether you are a bride who has some experience in the beauty department, or have spent your life avoiding the area at all costs, there is going to be something that has slipped your mind or confused your mind and I am here to clear all of that up for you! Because I love making peoples' lives easier, even when it makes mine harder.
Do I need a trial?
The quick answer is yes and no. I know, I said I was going to make your life easier, and here I am confusing you more. The truth is, you don't have to do anything you don't want to do. The reality, yes a trial is imperative for your wedding day. Not only will it give you an idea if you like the hair/makeup person you have chosen or not, but it will give the artist a chance to map out the correct products for your skin/hair, as well as gauge timing for the day of. As a bridal hair and makeup artist, I am using the trial day as a test run to perfect your desired look and then make extensive notes so that on your wedding day things can run as smooth as possible. Time is precious on that day and the last thing you want is to be running late because you actually don't like the makeup you requested, and are only just finding out that it isn't working for you. In addition, you will use your trial to see how it wears throughout the day and how it looks in different lighting and in photos. So while you may not NEED a trial, you do need a trial.
2. When should I book my trial?
It is a common trend that people will book their trials for a day they are going to have either a bridal shower or bachelorette, which would be usually a few months before the wedding. Do it too far in advance and you may not remember/like the style you've chosen on the day, or don't leave enough time and have no window to replace your artist if you've found that they're just not hitting the mark. Some people may argue that doing the trial for another wedding event is not the way to go- you run the risk of looking "the same" in your photos. In my experience, "the look" is the whole look, dress an all. Likely after your trial, you will have made a few tweaks and the final product with your dress, jewels, etc. will be that much more elevated. I also feel like going to a wedding event closer to the season of your actual wedding and having a full day of wear will give you a better idea of how the makeup is going to hold up! If you are having neither of these events, then I would recommend max. three months out, min. one month out. But know that I have done a trial two days before a wedding, eight months before a wedding, or not at all.
3. Can I wear red lipstick?
Why yes you can. But don't do it. As much as I am an advocate for doing whatever the heck you want on your wedding day, I will always try to advise against from a red lip. The color red in general, moves more than other shades, it is going to be a job of constant upkeep throughout the day for you. Teeth checking, re-applying, cleaning up around your lips, wiping your new spouse's face. But if you are dead set on wanting that red lip and want to spend the entire day as your own personal makeup artist, then by all means, do it up. But you will regret it.
4. Why is it so expensive
The age old question. The hair and makeup people are always questioned, because on the daily, YOU are the one doing your own hair and makeup- so why do you have to pay so much to get someone else to do what you do for yourself every day? Artists charge "exorbitant" amounts because it's more than just doing your makeup and doing your hair. You are paying them for the time they spend doing admin to plan out your day, their correspondence with you, the high quality tools and products they are using on your face- have you been to Sephora?! Try finding a foundation under $50, and we have to have 10 shades and 4 different types. Don't forget, they expire, so every so often we need to throw them away and buy more. It may seem like we come in for a few hours of the day and put a little makeup on your face then peace it, but that is just the tip of the iceberg, there is a lot that goes into your day, before and after, besides the actual application process. The unfortunate truth is that weddings are expensive, and each and every one of your vendors has put in time and work for you and that all comes with a price tag.
5. Why is wedding makeup so heavy?
There are a few ways to answer this question, 1- technically it shouldn't be heavy, products have come a long way, and if your artist is doing their job correctly, you shouldn't really feel like you're wearing a lot, even if, compared to your daily wear, it is a lot. 2- if by heavy you mean just more than what you usually wear, then the answer would be, to pick up in photos. Now, in this modern day of "no makeup makeup" and "lit from within", I would say people have definitely gone for a more natural approach to their wedding makeup. That being said, I cannot tell you the number of times a bride or bridesmaid has shown me a photo of "natural" makeup that is not, in fact, natural. Even for the natural looks, there is a lot more makeup applied than you think. I spent three whole months in makeup school learning to put makeup on people to make it look like they weren't wearing makeup. It is, ahem, an art. You are definitely going to want to wear just a hint more than something you'd wear on the regular, if not, then what is even the point? You want your wedding photos to look like you've just made a pit stop on your way to Costco? Then don't hire a makeup artist. If you want to look like a natural radiant goddess in the wedding photos you will carry with you for eternity, then put your trust in a professional that will be able to give you that, and don't be afraid of a little blush, because without it, Casper the friendly ghost may perpetually live in those photos.
I hope I've cleared up a few things for you. At the end of the day, you are in charge and you CAN do whatever you want. But, as with anything, there are consequences for choices, good and bad. So whatever you decide, just know that there are reasons things are the way that they are, and if you feel like you know better then good luck to you! But actually, as long as you're making conscience decisions and know that whichever way you decide to go, it won't be the end of the world, then your day will be just as you hope!
